I was reading the Sunday World this week and came about the story of a 73 year old Brazilian prostitute who was caught working in a Kildare brothel. I have to say, despite the bizarre nature of the story, it did raise a few interesting question.
Terezinha Aparecida de Jesus was running and working in the brothel when Gardaí paid a visit to the house on November 9 last year.
She was allowed to walk free from court after it was revealed that she would be going home to Brazil now that the case was finished.
It appears that she was charging $80 for a session, but on the premises the police only found $80, showing that she maybe hadn’t been that successful. Another young woman was involved in the operation, but was not there at the time of the raid.
Despite the judge saying that people could be open to abuse by people running brothels, the Gardai said they believed that no-one was forced to work in this establishment.
Judge Desmond Zaidan gave her probation on the basis that she was going back to Brazil after hearing the details of the case.
He ordered that the €80 found at the brothel go to the State.
Is it a Good Idea?
Now this would have been a generic story about a foreign sex worker getting busted, if it wasn’t for her age. At 73, she must be the oldest sex worker I have ever heard of, and it made this a case of interest for the Sunday World. The question is, can you be too old to be a sex worker?
We see on our pages that the escorts are mainly split into two sections. You have the younger women, and you have the more mature ones. Both appeal to certain tastes. However, it is rare that you ever find an escort of that age as to be fair, we aren’t biologically programmed to find that kind of woman attractive as it doesn’t help at all with reproduction. There would be a chance then that it would be difficult for a woman of that age to become successful in the industry.
However, one thing we do know from spending time here is that people have different kinds of urges. There will always be someone who is into something, and that includes old women. Would the lack of women of that age group actually make the old people who do advertise successful. Supply and demand and all that?
In the end, sex work is a business. If there is demand, the escort will be successful. I really am not interested in any ‘oh, she is too old to be doing this’ argument. As long as the escort is doing it willingly, it is up to her (or him) what they do. No-one should tell anyone what do to just because they don’t particularly like it.. If there is no demand for the service, it will die out naturally. We have a real market economy.
All Our Best
I just hope that the lady in question is OK when she moves back to Brazil. This has obviously been a stressful time and she needed the money, or she wouldn’t have been doing it. What the press seem to forget is that there are real people behind these stories with real feelings. I sometimes think papers like the Sunday World are just happy she will be soon out of the country and not working in our industry.
Our thoughts are with her.
