A teacher in Wales has been struck off amid allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a pupil who had just left her school.
Claire Horton, 33, of Newport, was found guilty of professional misconduct in front of a General Teaching Council of Wales disciplinary hearing.
After admitting what she called “the ultimate sin” of crossing professional lines, she was taken off the teaching register for two years. She has continuously denied having sex with the pupil.
Ms Horton, who was going through a messy divorce at the time, contacted the boy on Facebook just weeks after he left the school. She later picked the boy up from his home and took him to her house, where she claims they fell asleep. She stated.
“All I took from Pupil A was the hand of friendship,”
“Because of what was going on at home, teaching was my only lifeline. To be told I was anything other than ugly, fat, useless and worthless was a safety blanket that I foolishly used.”
“He was very kind and listened-I was just talking about what was going on with my ex-husband. He made me feel better”
What is not argued is that she sent ‘selfie’ pictures of herself in sexually provocative poses to the boy.
The boy claimed to have had sex with her, and although the police decided not to prosecute, the panel found she had an inappropriate and sexual relationship’ with the pupil.
Panel chair Helene Mansfield said ‘Mrs Horton displayed a lack of awareness of her responsibilities as a teacher and abused her position of trust.’
An Illicit Fantasy
I have to admit, my first reaction when I read this was ‘where was this teacher when I was at school?’. But on reflection, it really is a bad idea for pupils and teachers to get involved.
Any child (and at the age of 16, that is what you are) is in danger of becoming too emotionally attached, as they are not completely developed yet.
Also, whether the teacher is a predator like some, or just emotionally vulnerable like Ms Horton, they can have their lives and careers torn apart. Though Ms Horton may gain more sympathy than many in her position, she has still been very stupid.
Fantasies like this are best explored in the escorting world. Many Derry escorts are happy to take part in this kind of role play, and this comes without the inherent risk attached to the real life version. The ‘pupil’ is now older and more aware of the difference between love and sex, whilst the ‘teacher’ isn’t going to get struck off the register after the event.
All in all a much safer option!
