Well, what can we say? So long, Jim Wells!
Amid the storm surrounding his attack on gay adoption, Wells, who was Health Minister, has announced his resignation, so he can ‘be there to for his wife who is seriously ill’.
He issued the following statement.
“As many people are aware I have been focused on helping my wife during her fight for life,” he added.
“Those who know my family and I, know the last three months have been the toughest of our lives as we watched my wife, Grace, suffer two successive strokes and battle through major heart surgery.”
“However, as she now faces further challenges I have come to the point where I am no longer able to continue my ministerial duties and give Grace the attention she deserves,” he added.
The Mask Has Slipped
Now I perfectly understand that Mr Wells will be under pressure at the moment. Everyone here at Escort Ireland hopes that Mrs Wells makes a full recovery. Despite our political and moral differences, we all have families. To watch someone we love in such a bad way is awful. Seriously, we hope she is fighting fit sooner rather than later.
Still, for us, and most right minded people, this was more a case of a guy who was stressed out, and came out with a personal opinion, which would usually be kept well out of the public domain.
The timing of the resignation is coincidental, to say the least.
Here at Escort Ireland, we have always had a significant amount of contempt for Jim Wells. The man has spearheaded the campaign against the Northern Irish sex industry, and in doing so, is risking the lives of men and women everywhere, by forcing sex work underground. We have always maintained that his policy decisions are based on his warped sense of morality, and have nothing to do with helping anyone. Well, it looks like we now have proof.
Police are looking into the ‘virtuous’ Mr Wells, after he made some of the most homophobic comments I have ever heard in my life.
At a hustings event, he told those attending.
“You don’t bring a child up in a homosexual relationship. That a child is far more likely to be abused and neglected….”
Well, as you can see from the video, he was interrupted by a noticeable uproar from the audience.
Well, later on, he made a grovelling, and disingenuous apology.
“I accept that one line of what I said caused offence and deep concern.”
Mr Wells added: ” I regret having wrongly made that remark about abuse and I’m sorry those words were uttered. The comment did not reflect my view nor that of my party.”
Politicians from all over the UK are now queuing up to slaughter the DUP representative.
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said: “Those comments have lifted the lid on some really unpleasant views. The mask has slipped.
“I’ve been warning for weeks that while, of course, we should be alarmed about the prospects of Ed Miliband dancing to the tune of Alex Salmond, we should be equally alarmed at the prospect of a hapless David Cameron, minority Conservative administration, dancing to the tune of Nigel Farage, the right wing of his own party and some of these truly, truly, backward looking views from the DUP.”
Rather disgustingly, DUP leader and First Minister Peter Robinson has backed his mate to the hilt.
Mr Robinson said Mr Wells “accepted the remarks were offensive and that is why he has apologised”.
However, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuiness is less impressed.
“I accept that he is under pressure as a result of his wife’s serious illness and I acknowledge that he has apologised,” said Mr McGuinness.
“However, I think those words will ring hollow when judged against the DUP’s opposition to marriage equality, its support for a ban on blood donations from gay men and opposition to adoption by gay couples.”
A Long Retirement, Hopefully
This is the thing. These comments have got to be looked through that prism. The DUP is infested with unpleasant people, with equally despicable views.
During the Committee Stage of the Human Trafficking and Exploitation Bill he was exposed as having been using misinformation fed from unreliable ‘sources’. One session in particular with the Department of Justice was one of the most cringe-worthy encounters I’ve ever witnessed.
Gay adoption is perfectly right, and moral. If there are children out there who need a loving home, and there are gay couples who want to give love, then why should these people be kept apart? What Jim Wells is saying, is that gay couples will use kids as a sex toy. It is truly abhorrent.
Obviously if there are gay couples who are not fit to be parents, they don’t pass the checks, in much the same way as dodgy straight couples are. It really isn’t rocket science.
Well. Hopefully this is the last we see of Jim Wells. This kind of bigotry really isn’t needed as Northern Ireland, and society in general moves forward.
Obviously we hope that long retirement is in the company of Grace. Our prayers are with her in her fight.
But my God, her husband is, in the words of Father Ted, is a ‘fecking eejit’.

Totally agreed, but I don’t think you should have called him a “c**t”. You’re playing into the abolitionists’ hands by using offensive words like that.
i cant think of a better word for him, he is a cunt.
