International Sex Workers’ Day: Courage, Unity, and Action

Time flies! The International Sex Workers’ Day is here again in 2024. As we honour this significant day, it is crucial to reflect on the progress made and the work still needed to ensure that sex workers everywhere can live and work with dignity and security. International Sex Workers Day is a powerful reminder that every individual, regardless of their profession, deserves respect and justice.

A Bold Stand in History

Imagine this: On June 2, 1975, about 100 brave sex workers decided they’d had enough. They occupied Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon, France, demanding better living conditions. They hung a banner that read, “Our children do not want their mothers to go to jail.” Their bold move made headlines around the world and sparked a massive strike involving sex workers from all over France.

Their demands? Simple but powerful: stop police harassment, reopen their working hotels, and investigate sex worker murders properly. Their united front inspired sex workers in Marseille, Grenoble, Montpellier, and Paris to join in. This eight-day strike showcased their strength and solidarity.

Igniting a Movement

The police didn’t give in easily—they refused to engage with the protestors and threatened harsher punishments. After eight days, they cleared the church. Though no immediate law changes happened, this strike is credited with igniting the modern sex workers’ rights movement in Europe and the UK.

Since then, International Sex Workers’ Day has become a symbol of resilience and unity for sex workers everywhere, reminding us of the ongoing fight for rights and recognition.

Amplifying Voices on International Sex Workers’ Day 2024

Every year on June 2, we focus on Access to Justice for sex workers. This theme highlights the barriers they face in accessing justice, both as victims of crime and when charged with crimes. Because sex work is often criminalized. Many sex workers are denied the rights that other workers have, facing risks like detention, deportation, and legal sanctions.

To truly celebrate International Sex Workers’ Day, we need to amplify their voices and demand equal access to justice. It’s not just about acknowledging their struggles; it’s about pushing for real change.

Building on a Legacy of Activism

The action in Lyon taught us one big lesson: the sex worker community is stronger together. International Sex Workers’ Day is a platform to amplify the global sex worker movement. It’s a call to action, demanding justice and equality.

By building on the lessons from 1975, we can support sex workers in their ongoing fight for rights. It’s about solidarity, recognition, and creating a world where sex workers are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
