In my past relationships, periods were a no-go. I couldn’t even ask one of my previous partners to pick me up some tampons because he’d get offended by the idea. He’d pull a face at the fact that I was bleeding. When I was on my period, it became “blowjob week” to him.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? I’ve always assumed that people are against the idea of period sex. It is seen as dirty and disgusting. At least in my experience. So last year I decided to ask the people of EI how they feel about it. The results have surprised me.
Perceptions of period sex
I’ll be honest… my perceptions of period sex have changed over time. Back when I was a sweet and innocent woman who thought that doggy style was a daring sex position (yes, really), it was a definite no for me. None of my partners were interested in it, and they looked disgusted when I was on my period.
Over time, my attitudes have changed massively. It’s no longer a taboo subject for me. In fact, I understand just why it is good for you to have sex on your period. However, not everyone feels the same way. Some partners wouldn’t even entertain the possibility, labelling the act as “gross”.
We can’t even show blood in adverts for “feminine hygiene products” or “sanitary products”. Instead it is a mysterious blue liquid. So when it comes to periods, we shouldn’t be surprised that the world seems pretty divided on the subject. It seems to be either a firm yes or a loud no, as you can see in the debate below.
Encouraging period positivity
About this time last year, Pornhub announced that they were offering free premium porn for those on their periods. This was a huge move for the world of sex. They were showing that there is nothing to be ashamed of, especially when it comes to your period.
They decided that they wanted to help anyone struggling through their period by giving them something special. So they gave them free premium porn! On their period, those struggling with the cramps and pain can be comforted by watching some lovely porn and masturbating their pain away.
I will admit that the move impressed me a hell of a lot. It wasn’t something I ever expected to see, and yet Pornhub made a bold move. I was left wondering what you all think about period sex, and so I asked. Ask and you shall receive!
How EI views it
After telling you all about Pornhub’s effort to be period-positive, I wanted to know how others felt about it. As I’ve already said, my experiences were pretty negative. While some people I spoke to were happy to enjoy period sex, others definitely were not.
So I asked you a question that was praying on my mind. How do you feel about period sex? I was expecting the results to be very clear, with most objecting to it. However, I was pleasantly surprised!
25% of you stated that you love it. No doubt you see how amazing it can be with your partner. 16% of you said that there was no way you would try it. It was a hard no for you. Most interesting is that 59% of you stated that you’d be “willing to try it in the right circumstances”. I’d say that’s a huge win!
Are you surprised?
I am genuinely shocked by the results. Given the intense discussions I’ve seen on the forums regarding this topic, I was expecting a stronger divide between “yes” and “no”. I was not expecting many of you to say that you’d be happy to try it.
