Sometimes, a trailer can break the internet. We have seen people talking about the things that they hope to see in the film, and things that they have spotted in the trailer that you may have otherwise missed. One trailer that has really broken the internet this week is the first official trailer for the next Fifty Shades film, and that is Fifty Shades Darker.
The film follows the story of the dominant business man, Christian Grey, and the woman he hopes will be his submissive partner, Anastasia Steele. The books and films have well and truly split people. Many love them, thinking that they are inspiring people to get a little kinkier in the bedroom, while dominatrixes and subs around the world are coming out to say that what happens in Fifty Shades isn’t what really happens in a true dom/sub relationship.
But what does the latest trailer tell us about the series? Is there hope that it will fix all of the mistakes made in the previous film? Is it something that we want to watch? Join us as we take a look at the trailer for the Fifty Shades Darker film and just what we know about it.
The Fifty Shades Darker Trailer
It was on Monday that we were given a brief 19 second teaser for the film Fifty Shades Darker, with the trailer announcing that we would get the full worldwide trailer debut the very next day… and the Fifty Shades Darker team delivered!
The full trailer, which you can see above, is just under two minutes long, and has already taken the internet by storm.
Slip into something a shade darker
So we immediately see that there are a few similarities between the Fifty Shades Darker trailer and the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer. For a start, the films are going to have similar soundtracks. Beyoncé created a darker, more sultry version of ‘Crazy in Love’ for the film, and the trailer for Fifty Shades Darker has another version of the song, this time by Miguel. Need to refresh your mind about the trailer for the first film? You can find it below.
However, we can also see that there are a lot of differences between the two trailers. The first film, when I saw the trailer and when I watched it, made me angry. They seemed to be trying to suggest that Grey’s attitude was romantic, and not at all abusive. However, those uncertain about his attitude found that he was being abusive to Ana, especially when she shouted the safe word and he continued with the act.
This trailer, while it does have hints of romantic intentions, seems to be a lot darker… and this is clear from the beginning. We are immediately told to “slip into something a shade darker”, and that is exactly what the trailer does. On Twitter, the @Official50World profile stated that “the story is sort of like a thriller now and it gets kind of scary”, telling us that the things we see in the trailer are just a hint of what is to come.
Eyes Wide Shut and Kim Basinger
One of the big things that we see in the trailer is that there is some kind of masquerade party. Plenty of people have immediately pointed out that this scene seems to be a little ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and makes them wonder just what they are going to see next. However, while the idea of going to a party like that is intriguing for many people, it is instead the people they see there.
Kim Basinger, pictured in the gif above, makes her appearance, and rumours have immediately begun to spread that she might be playing the “Mrs. Robinson” character. This is a character that we heard about very briefly in the first film and book, but it seems that she will finally get an appearance here. And Kim Basinger being in the film is something that really does excite us.
No rules, no punishments, no secrets
People are over the moon that we are getting a second instalment in the Fifty Shades series, and that Fifty Shades Darker promises to go a little bit deeper into the world of BDSM… but that is something we are missing from the trailer. There seems to be no hint of BDSM or kink between Ana and Christian, as the most raunchy thing they seem to get up to is sex in the shower.
It is definitely not the kind of thing that we were expecting. The trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey had whips, chains, and blindfolds to show us. There isn’t even the slightest hint of those things in Fifty Shades Darker, as the closest we get is shower sex and masquerades.
The internet reacts!
Needless to say, the internet reacted in a huge way to the release of the trailer. People immediately took to social media websites, like Twitter, and made the #FiftyShadesDarker hashtag hit the trending list the day that it was released.
However, it wasn’t just on social media that people were getting excited. In fact, the comments for the official trailer went crazy, with some people starting discussions about who was pumped to see the movie. There were also some people stating things like “fifty shades darker? more like fifty shades of fuck me in the ass because im so excited for this”. That is definitely one unique way to show your excitement.
Will we be watching?
When I first heard about the Fifty Shades series, I wasn’t particularly interested in it. I didn’t want to read the books or see the films at all. The trailer for the first film didn’t interest me at all, and when I actually watched the film, I felt as though I’d been right to avoid it.
However, the trailer for Fifty Shades Darker seems to show it as an entirely different film. It doesn’t really seem in any way connected to the first, thanks to the lack of BDSM. In fact, they only seem related because of the names used. Will we be watching it? Maybe. Will you? Let us know in the comment box below.
