I think he signed some preliminary agreement to purchase with Twitter and then tried to reign on it when Tesla's stocks starting dropping, because all his money is in stocks.

Twitter sued to force the deal. I think Musk's actions were damaging them financially.

Now Musk has purchased and he needs to claw money back fast so he's firing half the staff and monetising.
