I get where some are coming from here , initially I was not convinced either. Indeed their was a report on the 3 month excess death rate here that put the danger in a different light, and another package in UK where they talked about the fact that many who had died only had a few months to live , Both these in early months of it
I also felt that trying to control an entire population simply not possible
However I now think we are in a different place and we need to work together to defeat it , because of new variants that are massively more contagious and as I see it affecting younger people more and Long Covid that is seriously harming thousands of our younger population . I also believe new variants are more lethal
Our medical ethics are clear we treat all , this is a good thing but we cannot see Covid in isolation of the rest of the Health Service . To get our Health Service back to where it needs to be and from there education and from there the general economy the virus must be defeated . Swedish Model not working either .
A friend of mine challenged a group for not wearing masks on Public Transport recently , got told it was none of his business , well it is all our business at just about every level .
If Vaccine is not the answer , what is ?

This is a good question. I have expierence in biomedical science, the healthcare industry and in particular recently, the development of the Pfizer vaccine. But I can admit that I don't feel as comfortable talking about the intricacies of the other vaccines that have been developed. However I would think that your assumption would be correct and the current vaccines might not have the same effectiveness vs any new variants. This is a massive worry and is somthing I am sure is being worked on, unfortunately being so novel I can't imagine we have many conclusive answers about it yet.

Some good points Tony
To my knowledge the Pfizer vaccine has not resulted in any deaths so far. Not to say this is not a possibility since it hasn't been tested through every possible scenario yet, but I would rest easy unless you have a very rare illness or are extremely unlucky. Unfortunately I don't have extensive knowledge about all of the vaccines that have been developed so won't speculate on those.
I completly agree it's unfortunate that there are many conflicts of interest involved throughout the healthcare industry. But as it stands we rely on the larger companies as they have the resources to make things happen. For most people who are working in the area,
managing conflicts of interest in the pharmaceutical and healthacre sector is a very real and constant battle. I believe this to be prevalent in any industrial complex, but it's especially worrying in healthcare as a lot of the time it's people’s lives at stake.
I'd compare wearing a mask to wearing a bike helmet or a car seatbelt. I'm sure you can find lots and lots of studies showing that people who do both those things still die in bike and car accidents, it doesn't mean they aren't effective at their purpose. The mask is not a panacea or solution to our problems, but it does help reduce the spread in a significant and marked way.
I don't deny this and you are free to believe whichever argument you think hold the most strength. I try to remain unbiased when looking at the data and research (although as a human I'm not infallible). Even scientific consensus has often been shown to be incomplete and in general science by its nature will always be incomplete. But we can make some good guesses based on our work so far.
I think about this matter a lot as a large part of my life requires me to do so. If it is all a big hoax I've certainly been duped. I would also be very impressed by the massive level of international cooperation involved to maintain a global conspiracy. And all of the years I've spent in education and in my career and building relationships with people I trust will have been a sham. So I hope it's not the case, I certainly haven’t seen any evidence of it and have seen with my own eyes evidence of the reality of the situation. But I suppose you never know, we could very well all be living in a simulation sure.
For the record, I don't base anything I have said on what might be on Facebook?, RTE or the media, in fact I would love if I saw more of what I'm sharing with you on these platforms!
Good luck and take care Tony.
