I don't see what all the fuss is about. England wants to leave the EU. The EU already have arrangements for dealing with non EU countries. Just add England to the list of non EU countries, agree border arrangements and kick them out.

But there has always been freedom of movement between UK and Ireland. “Frictionless” border is part of the agreement now anyhow.
There has never been any passport controls between Northern Ireland and The Republic. Wouldn’t be politically acceptable to change it.
