If reliability and economy are high up your list and a prestige badge is not important ,its hard to look past a Toyota Camry on that budget.

Toyota or VW for reliability. Skoda is a fine car. Saloon, for commuting driving, plug in hybrid. Plug in gives a bit of range before go go juice kicks in.
I've a rav4 plug in hybrid. Big car, moves like fucking lightning and runs on the battery in town for about 50kms (I plug it in and it charges at 2am). Love it, my 3rd rav!

I had a rental Skoda Octavia 1.0 petrol.
It was unbelievably quick for a 1.0.
I remember thinking it's all you really need in a car.
Good radio too, android auto, worked better than the radio in my car
