    Default Private Sean Rooney Rip

I am numb at the killing of Private Sean Rooney in Lebanon
What he was doing is something close to my heart
Hope that Shane Kearney makes a recovery
Shocking that this should happen peacekeepers

    Yes Shocking.

I feel so bad for Private Sean Rooney's family.

    Fingers crossed for Shane Kearney.

I think in large part we in Ireland forget the dangers our troops face while peacekeeping.

I think it's about time the government stops pissing about them and pays them a decent wage and improves there working conditions.

So so tragic, 23 years old his whole life ahead of him. God love his family. The news this past week just seems to be murder after murder after murder

Does anyone know which terrorists attached their APC convoy?

Questions should be asked about the armoured vehicles Ireland are sending their troops out in.

This will be very sad Christmas for the families involved. Too many flag draped coffins from far away places return home. The politicians and their children who send these lads and women there will never serve a day and care nothing about families who will never be the same again.

It looks like they were driving armoured SUVs. I don't know if those specifically belong to the Defence Forces or are just sitting in the vehicle pool at UNIFIL HQ. I'm surprised this article mentions there are multiple incidents of UN troops getting surrounded and essentially robbed by civilians.

The old wagons we used to have were shite as well. Snatch Land Rover weren't up to the job in the Middle East either. The lads used to call them mobile coffins. It was like driving around in a petrol lighter.

They are AUV's Armoured Utility Vehicles, They have small arms protection, from the Pics you can see there was sustained fire on the windows which would block visibility and only hold for so long. I was talking to my friend who serves and he told me that if troops go off route the locals become V paranoid, they have surrounded the cars and striped the troops of equipment on a few occasions ,they believe they are taking photos and marking locations etc, gathering intelligence for the other side, those incidents don't make news. Its seems to be happening more and becoming more hostile.
It looks like that's what happened, Cars got separated for whatever reason, all went wrong and then got shot up and crashed.
To kill innocent peace keepers like that is horrendous, they are there to protect. God help anyone with family out there, it must be terrifying.
The other patrol members are bound to be effected both physically and mentally.

It was nice to see the media and country coming together hailing the heroic work our DF do.

I don't know what their rules of engagement were out there, but if I found myself in a contact, I would have returned fire and explained later. Too many British, Irish, French, German, Canadian, Polish (and I could go on and on) have died in shit holes like this, for people who don't show them any respect and to meet their government's objects. A part of me thinks the West should pull out and allow them to get on with it if they want to kill each other. A lesser known fact is that the Irish Government and every Government fielding troops in UN ops are paid 400 euro, per day for each soldier deployed. It would fit their governments better to give them proper armour to keep their forces safe. This wouldn't happen, because some politician polishing a seat with their arse would say up armoured vehicles would looked too aggressive. I am annoyed about this for a very good reason close to my heart that I can't go into.
