You should ask for this thread to be moved dude.

    Max Hastings, Vietnam.

    Bloody brilliant book highly recommended.

There are very few complete history's of the Vietnam war. Loads of individual accounts etc.

Mr Hastings says in his book that it was inspired by The Vietnam War documentary by Ken Burns on PBS. Brilliant stuff.

You should watch all ken Burns documentary's he is a master history story teller of American history.

Oh I've seen the documentaries. I know that book, but I haven't read it. I've read so much on WWII. I did however read "Vietnam" by Christian Apply...this book is a bit of a monster, but a brilliant, harrowing read...it's told from every perspective so it's so impartial. I found it a tough read and very moving. I recommend. I'm going to get your book now actually as I'd heard of it.

Just finished Master of the Senate by Robert A. Caro his third book on Lyndon B. Johnson.

A master peace and a brilliant president if his legacy was not ruined by the Vietnam war which hunted him to the end of his days.

Although Mr Caro has yet to write about this period.

    Looking forward to it.

Someone once told me if you want to even try to understand about America read about the presidents. They where so right.

Truman. By David McCullough is a must read and reads more like a history of the wild west. Brilliant stuff.

One of the best books I have ever read is A Bright Shining Light. John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam. By Neil Sheehan. Fucked up stuff.

Neil Sheehan it is fair to say is one of the reasons why people in the west have such a negative view on the that war. Vietnam was no better or worse than any other war, it was the reporting on it that was too much in peoples faces.

    Now you have me started...

"Lincoln", David Herbert Donald - absolutely outstanding book. I actually got it at the little bookshop at the Lincoln Memorial.

I was always obsessed with JFK :

"Kennedy", Robert Dallek - this is the definitive biography on JFK.

"Death Of A President", William Manchester - outstanding (LBJ heavily in that book...their relationship was very interesting).

"Case Closed", Gerald Posner - very interesting book looking at some of the conspiracies and the arguments against them.

(I had to look up some of the author's names as I'd forgotten).

I would never have thought to read about her in a million years.

    I stand corrected.

She is a very interesting woman.

I will read that for sure.

Read it, brilliant. So misunderstood he reminds me of George W Bush. Hated by his contemporaries.

Like Lincoln he will go down in history as one of the greatest presidents of America.

I have to read this, Kennedy, Robert Dallek. Death Of A President, William Manchester.

    Thanks I will read them.

The Vietnam book I mentioned was written by Christian Appy. Slight spelling mistake I can't edit in earlier post.

    Over and out .

Started reading today The Boy Who never Came Home by Emma McMenamy.

About the missing teenager Philip Cairns.

I'm going to be very depressed I'm sure by the time I finish it.

    here's one worth reading

I actually started a thread on Books in December but it died away after a few pages, this one looks to be going strong and hopefully it will continue.

I fall in and out of reading, currently out , but always intend to read more and always on the look out for suggestions.
