If this stupid idea has been a failure/disaster in Sweden and Norway, and rejected by the Danes, Finns, French, Scots and English, why are we adopting it here?|
Because to paraphrase Minister Fitzgerald; ''sending a message is more important than sex worker rights.''

The Swedish Model is about disapproval of prostitution, plain and simple. In Sweden it was driven by a feminist agenda, here it is a mix of feminism and religion. Actual facts and the opinions & safety of sex workers are irrelevant in Ireland, while our nearest neighbour has taken them into account and rejected this entirely illogical and dishonest legislation.
    2014 in Northern Ireland:

Number of reported attacks on sex workers 70

Number of sex trafficking cases ZERO

It could be something like the Merseyside Model where police pay attention to crimes against sex workers rather than trying to enforce exisiting laws such as soliciting on the street.

It would be perfect, but sadly, this is a "moral" ethic to promote that prostitution is sin. I can't remember where I read it, but one of these NGOs claimed that prostitution was 'corrupting the purity of the men of Ireland'. I will try to find that and post the link.

Well, it has certainly spooked me and led me to think it's time to hang up my boots.

Can I ask one really potentially stupid question? This law isn't going to be retrospective, is it? They aren't going to go after people for their previous activities are they? I assume, and hope, this will only be used against buyers of sex from hereon out?

Yes, but I don't believe the Guards have the time or resources to engage in a moral campaign

I haven't heard that one before, but in the age of limitless porn, ashley madison, hook up 'dating sites', fetlife and one night stands, claiming that escorts are ''corrupting the men of Ireland'' is a complete joke.

No it definitely won't be retrospective.

A bill been passed and enacted are two different things, it will be months before it is law, and its completely illegal to charge someone of a crime that was not a crime at the time offensive

As I said punters will get there knickers in a twist over this, but the urge will come they will subcum, and see its business as usual for years government preach in parliament buildings about sex work, abolish it, legalise it do this and that

What has never changed is the fact its business as usual

Do you see the war on drugs as a success? Drugs are easier to prove, your in possession or drug test to see your using, the burden of proof miles higher, yet they haven't discouraged people have they? How many professionals I see who like an old line at the weekend, so it been illegal doesn't discourage them or hinder them finding it

I said before you would get coke to your house faster than an out call

With all the cut backs, in the Garda how will they police it, we don't use wire taps here for criminal activity are we to pay millions for it now and training and the country near breaking point with the current government

Also to note this current government could very easily be gone before this is law, which could be 2016 even

Its all a political gimmick, it will be used like it was used in the north

The official Swedish position is: “prostitution is considered to cause serious harm both to individuals and to society as a whole.”
    Ditto Ireland.
Subjective morals and opinions override sex worker safety. Politics is always smoke-and-mirrors, a dirty game played for the purpose of staying in power. This law is based upon the expectation of winning votes as it is assumed a majority don't approve of sex work, and, additionally, the public has been led to believe that victims will be rescued - a win-win for the politicians.
But, as usual in politics, we are being distracted and are fed limited options. Ditto: Irish Water.
