Default Age check required before accessing adult sites?

This morning I saw on the UK news that allegedly 500,000 minors (under 18) are accessing adult websites, and those figures only come from laptops, not accounting for mobile devices such as tablets and mobile phones.

I agree that something needs to be done. In my opinion, online porn really is an issue and it is too easy for kids to access it. It creates the illusion that it is normal for a man to asphyxiate a woman while banging her up the ass, then blowing his load into her mouth while another willing female partner joins in on a snowballing session. You catch my drift, I'm sure.

Anyway, they are campaigning about it:

In all honesty, the internet cannot be policed, but if people had to verify their details and log in every time they accessed an internet browser before they can load an internet page, then that might solve many problems in my opinion.

i imagine it's a big problem and wasn't when i was young. i think porn can be harmful. i think
as with so many things education is more important than attempts at restriction. it's far better when someone says
"nah-i don't want to do that"

So how do you suggest they verify their age - credit card details ?, passport details ?-in fact any details that could be supplied to verify age would be of too personel a nature to submit to any unknown site ,any site that looks for that kind of detail would have few visitors and no visitors = no advertising = no revenue

That's a tough one. It's clear that something badly needs to be done, and fast, but as already stated 'how'? It's the kind of issue that has potentially nasty ramifications for privacy concerns, ramifications that might not be apparent until legislation has been enacted. Then we'll start to see how fast having a 'choice' in providing your personal data becomes eroded and where that leads. Personally I think if we're gonna let that happen we might as well just avoid all the government spending and let the NSA do the job for us. There's no easy answer that's for sure.

I heard something about xxx being used instead of www for adult sites.

I may be making up stories but if you had to opt into having access to a different part of the internet in your internet package, then maybe thats a way to keep the kids out...
I also think that a lot of people would then have to setup a separate credit card that the spouse doesnt know about in order to pay for the opt in.

just brain storming... before anyone jumps down my thoat

I think the triple xxx domain registry was a good idea but it never got beyond a voluntary option on the site owners side. If triple xxx domains for porn sites were made mandatory we'd be heading in the right direction, but there was such a backlash to that when it was suggested that it's all but dead now. Some of the objections raised did seem like legitimate concerns but of course the main objections were corporate related (anti trust etc).

Edit: It's the law being accommodating to the moneyed interests yet again.

I havent given this a huge amount of thought, but at this stage I would say that if they are serious about letting kids have normal childhoods, then they are going to have to segregate the internet.

Can you just imagine the negative impact that this has had on the next generation, and by that I mean the 12 to 15 year olds... these are going to be some warped individuals...

Yup. As the parent of a post-teen daughter I'm all too aware. I can only imagine the effect today's internet porn would have had on me as a teen/ pre-teen. Some things I stumble upon nowadays, even with my internet desensitized critical faculties, can leave a disturbing impression.

I agree in principle with the segregation idea as far as it would extend to the current subject ie. triple x domains, but where does the segregation stop and who determines that?

How would be possible to do that?

If you're able to write, anyone who is 10,12.14....go on ; could say they are over 18 or 21 by clicking in a button who say's: I'm over 18/21.

If there was a way would be great but how? don't see it....

Well I guess it would be similar to the rule on facebook - no porn photographic or video
    If reported you are deleted.

So, if you report an adult website to the internet commissioners ( im not sure if they exist, but I guess it would be the same people that block child porn), then the site will either be moved to xxx location or deleted...
