Many years ago, I was in New York for a winter break with my old poppa. For two culchies like ourselves, everything in that city was a wonder. Well, except for the customary tipping. My father could not see why he should be obliged to tip every cab driver when most of them were impolite and monosyllabic in response to questions. He did get the last laugh on one especially rude cabbie though. The fare came to $9.90. Pop gave him a ten-dollar bill and said cheerfully "Keep the change." The cabbie actually threw the dime at us as he drove away. Ah, the memories.
