I read the book SuperFreakonomics a while ago. It devoted a chapter to some of the economic and behavioural aspects of prostitution and some interesting studies in that area. This is an American book, so some of the issues don't really correspond to the situation in Ireland.

However the author, in filling in some of the background of a study of prostitution in Chicago, gave a short history. Apparently in the good old days sexwork ears charged big money for their services in the high end brothels of that city. However in the intervening years the demand for their services went into decline, why? The sexual revolution and the era of free love in the sixties meant that regular women were more open to sexual adventures thus..... Reducing the demand for prostitution.

So ruhama, Imigrant council of Ireland, trade unions, ica, labour women, macra na feirme, Sinn Fein and all of the 68 torl organisations; if you want to reduce demand forget jailing us, just let free love reign. Encourage the women folk to be less discerning, there are plenty shy, ugly, fat, charmless and smelly men that need some free lovin

How will the gardai police these ridiculous Swedish laws? Smash and grab, kicking in doors, listening through key holes, survalence vans, high tech Internet snooping, wire taps, beating confessions out of shitless johns, help from nosey neighbours, jealous spouses.

And what of the victims of these pervert sex fiends, you know the ones that freely advertise their services and use makeup and trashy lingerie and tricky photography to make themselves more alluring? And the elusive pimps that are pulling the strings of ALL these women.

And what of the real criminals that will be robbing and raping and assaulting and defrauding away while scarce resources are deployed busting up consenting adults doing what consenting adults do.?

Just a few thoughts that popped into my head.... Need to get more I guess

Like many young rural migrant women who ended up in Beijing, struggling to find work without a high school education, she turned to prostitution.

An industry that had all but disappeared after the People’s Republic was founded in 1949 following the Communist revolution has become widespread in China after three decades of economic “reform and opening up”, employing, according to a United Nations estimate, between four and six million people.

Although ubiquitous in China today, the sex industry has become an increasingly unsafe profession, where sex workers are exposed to almost routine abuse even at the hands of law enforcement authorities, according to a new report published on Tuesday by Human Rights Watch (HRW).

The study, based on interviews with 75 women sex-workers in Beijing, documents their lives and difficulties, detailing the abuse they face at the hands of police and the little recourse they have to justice.

Ms. Xiao, from northeastern Heilongjiang, found herself in police custody four years ago following a raid. She was beaten by police to extract a confession, without which the police would have been unable to detain her. “I was beaten until I turned black and blue, because I wouldn’t admit to prostitution,” she said in an interview. “They attached us to trees, threw freezing cold water on us, and then proceeded to beat us”.

The sex industry in China, although illegal, has become widespread, often functioning with the tacit backing of local police officials, according to HRW.

Publicised crackdown campaigns that the police launch, often to coincide with important political events, have led to “increased incidences of police brutality” as well as “arbitrary arrests and detentions” and “physical violence”, HRW says.

The crackdowns, the report suggests, have become counterproductive, making the industry less safe by “driving the trade further underground” and “effectively increasing the vulnerability of women who engage in sex work to police and client abuse.”

The crackdowns “also induce some sex workers to engage in higher risk sexual behaviour,” the HRW report says. For instance, sex workers said that because of the crackdowns, “they stopped carrying or using condoms for fear that the police would use their possession of condoms as evidence of prostitution” as they had done in many cases.

While officially regarded as one of China’s “six social evils” – the others are gambling, superstition, drug trafficking, pornography and human trafficking – prostitution has become widely prevalent in China, with sex workers often openly employed in karaoke venues, hotels and nightclubs.

The government periodically launches “sweep away” campaigns that last several weeks, during which police raid entertainment venues and detain sex workers. Campaigns in the past have been accompanied by controversial “shame parades”, where suspects are made to walk through city streets. After a media campaign in 2010 hit out at the campaign as infringing on the rights of suspects, the parades have been phased out.

The HRW report calls on the government to stop the practice of “sweeps”, which enables abuses, and to also lift restrictions on civil society organisations in China that work for sex workers’ rights and to promote health awareness. It also recommends the "removal of criminal and administrative sanctions against voluntary, consensual adult sex work and related offenses, such as solicitation".

Jing Ying, a 23-year-old sex worker from Sichuan, said in an interview it was common for police to extort sex workers for their services, particularly during raids, and it was impossible to report any abuses considering that they were considered criminals to begin with. HRW also found that State health agencies, such as the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), were themselves harming – and not helping – sex workers, by carrying out forced HIV tests and also mistreating patients.

“Failure to uphold the rights of the millions of women who voluntarily engage in sex work leaves them subject to discrimination, abuse, exploitation, and undercuts public health policies,” the report says.

http://www.irishexaminer.com/lifesty...ul-230129.html

The first thing you need to know is that literally the ONLY "sex induced injury" OF ANY KIND I have ever had was a post and core crown knocked loose by a devastatingly attractive young gay guy from Donegal who (ok, maybe with a little help from my more mischievous friends) mistook me for a tranny and expressed his appreciation perhaps a little too enthusiatically.

This was a purely social occasion (to whit: Alternative Miss Ireland) 15 years after I "exited purrostitution" and while initially, perhaps *technically* non- consensual on my part he was SO DARN CUTE - let's keep it real...

While I remember, I must take the this opportunity to commend Justine Reilly. I only met her once, in 2008, but saw her on many more occasions (the distinctive hair...can't miss it) and I confess myself in AWE of:

The way she kept herself clean

The huge variety of complex outfits and accessories she maintained

The amount of booze she could afford to put away

...and of course, the way she maintained those hair extensions

Imagine...ALL while homeless and living in a van...you have to respect THAT sort of ingenuity...

Incidentally, while a sex worker I had 2 BMWs. The first was a 13 year old 1976 twin carb 520 that, despite being automatic, could put just about ANYTHING off the road but tended to do gpm rather than mpg, followed by a 7 year old BMW 320i.

Call me a spoilsport, but I don't think a Ferrari would have been terribly practical...the tail happy 320i was bad enough to drive home on an icy night.

Paul Reynolds, such a tender hearted, compassionate soul that he used hidden cameras to film sex workers without their permission open face on Fitzwilliam Square in the late 90s (knowing that this would destroy their lives, because I had explained it to him, at length, myself when I got the Guards to stop him doing the same thing in '93). This was broadcast on the 6pm and 9pm news. One of the clips chosen showed a sex worker going down a lane to answer a call of nature. As you can see his sincere concern for the dignity of sex workers has no limits...

He has also assured me that sex work caused my autism, and outed me to the Trinity Philosophiocal society...last year...

You know, he probably SHOULD be appointed to head up a team dedicated to protecting the lives and dignity of sex workers...

Better now?

*From the Article*

*Deputy Thomas Pringle today tabled his Bill in the Dáil to...

From the Article
Comment

Deputy Thomas Pringle today tabled his Bill in the Dáil to criminalise the purchase of sexual services, with a vote on the Bill to take place next Tuesday, where he highlighted the importance of legislating in line with the Swedish model.
This clearly highlights that Deputy Pringle has failed to conduct sufficient research into the (negative) realities which Swedish-style Legislation will impose upon persons whom it supposedly serves to protect (namely Independent Sex Workers [as the negative implications of Swedish-style Legislation have been highlighted by both members of the EI Community and persons not in any way connected with the EI Community]).

“I strongly believe that prostitution is incompatible with contemporary values and that it is a serious social problem, which can and should be abolished.
Personal views have no place in consideration for introduction of Legislation which poses the severe negative implications of Swedish-style Legislation.

In reality, very few women choose to willingly engage in prostitution, with most who are involved having very few real choices.
I have highlighted on a number of occasions that any of the girls I met from EI were very intelligent (some were even educated to University level [and most were multi-lingual]), who never exhibited behaviours associated with drug and/or alcohol dependence, and never gave me the impression they were doing anything they didn’t want to do.
(It is also worth highlighting that, there are more persons in Ireland whom are homeless, unemployed, living in poverty and are actual victims of numerous other problems [and in alot of cases encounter problems accessing appropriate and necessary State Services] than there are “victims” of the Sex Industry. What is being done to help these people?)

This issue must be addressed – we must decriminalise the victims in this ‘trade’ and give them the option of rehabilitation, while targeting demand.
“Rehabilitation” in Ireland for persons "wishing to exit the Sex Industry" (re Ruhama and TORL) make life misery for persons whom they are supposedly trying to improve the lives of. In addition, “targeting demand” will remove (or reduce to levels which would prove impossible to survive on) the incomes of Independent Sex Workers.

For me it’s simple – anything that contributes to gender inequality and allows for the purchase of one human being for the gratification of another is not only unacceptable, it is fundamentally and morally wrong.
Purchase of sexual services is just that, the purchase of a service. Clients of Independent Sex Workers are not purchasing the Independent Sex Worker, and do not consider themselves to be purchasing another human being. The above bolden statement by Pringle speaks volumes (and not in a good way) about Pringle’s attitude towards Independent Sex Workers (and people in general, for that matter).

When they choose to support legalising an ‘industry’ that profits from breaching human rights in a most degrading way, they are attempting to justify the commercialisation of the human body, something which should never be for sale.
Persons (whether they be Male, Female or Transgender) whom are working in the Sex Industry of their own will are not having their Human Rights breached in any way and are quiet capable of speaking for themselves on this matter.

this much I know to be factual: the sex industry is a cruel and disturbing place that is run by criminals, and the only feasible way to bring this industry to its knees is to cut off the demand.
Swedish-style Legislation will actually be of benefit to criminals. This is beyond apparent in Sweden and Norway (where Swedish-style Legislation is implemented and enacted).

“We need to send a clear message to traffickers and pimps that women are no longer for sale in Ireland,” stated Pringle.
If Swedish-style Legislation is introduced, scum such as pimps and traffickers will raise a glass to Pringle.

From the Article
Comment

The Criminal Law Sexual Offences Bill, to be introduced by Independent TD Thomas Pringle, sets out to partially decriminalise prostitution while imposing criminal sanctions on those who use prostitutes.
Will the proposed Criminal Sanctions “across the board” apply to
(A)	Men who use visit Male Independent Sex Workers
(B)	Women who visit Female Independent Sex Workers
(C)	Women who visit Male Independent Sex Workers

The campaign, endorsed by 68 organisations including the Immigrant Council of Ireland,Ruhama (the support body for women in prostitution), the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the Labour Party, Safe Ireland, the Rape Crisis Network and Barnardos, aims to end prostitution and sex-trafficking.
Prostitution, Human Trafficking (and “Sex Trafficking”) are three totally separate entities (and must subsequently be treated as such when considering proposals for Legislation which has the potential to inflict serious negative implications upon the livelihoods of Independent Sex Workers).

It will create a situation that will remove the attractiveness of prostitution and trafficking from organised criminal elements
Criminal elements will actually benefit if Swedish-style Legislation is introduced in Ireland for numerous reasons which I have highlighted in relevant threads in “Sex Work in the Media and Law”.

purchasers of sexual services to be prosecuted with the element of ‘name and shame’ acting as a deterrent.”
“Naming and Shaming” has the potential to negatively impact greater upon families of “purchasers” than upon the “purchasers” themselves.

The Bill provides for an ascending scale of penalties, from a fixed-notice fine of €500 for first-time offenders, to a €4,000 fine and/or four-week jail sentence for repeat offenders.
There is no mention of possibilities of Criminal Sections for scum such as pimps and human traffickers.

the council had “ come to the firm conclusion that the best way to end the crime of sex trafficking was to target the demand for prostitution”.
There is an abundance of information (which is not too hard to find) available that highlights that Swedish-style Legislation has made conditions even worse for Independent Sex Workers in Sweden. In addition, in Norway (where Swedish-style Legislation is implemented and enacted), the Norwegian Government are considering eradication of Swedish-style Legislation and one Opposition Party are promising to eradicate Swedish-style Legislation if elected (for the reasons which I have just highlighted).

Ms Charlton rejected arguments that prostitution should be viewed as similar to other industries or employment opportunities. “It is run by organised crime which places up to 800 women for sale everyday online in Ireland”
Denise Charlton describes the Sex Industry as “women for sale everyday online in Ireland”. Women working independently in the Sex Industry are NOT FOR SALE; they are selling a service, and are not selling themselves. If this is how Denise Charlton views persons working in the Sex Industry, it speaks a lot (and not in a good way) about her views of Independent Sex Workers (and people in general, for that matter).

Rowley, communications and policy officer with Ruhama, also rejected this proposition, saying one could “never, never countenance prostitution as a valid or acceptable choice for women. No job in a decent society should involve women being at risk of rape and violence every day”.
Geraldine Rowley comments that one could “never, never countenance prostitution as a valid or acceptable choice for women. Why, then, are so many Independent Sex Workers vehemently opposed to the introduction of Swedish-style Legislation (in addition, if Ruhama and TORL are supposedly working in the interest of Independent Sex Workers, why are they silencing them and refusing to allow them to put forth their own testimony [instead of insisting that Independent Sex Workers agree with Ruhama and TORL’s lies]).
