[SIZE=4]Q1. John Jones lives in Maidenhead. He has one girlfriend in Reading and another in Slough. He has no car and therefore takes the train whenever he goes to see them.
Trains stopping in Maidenhead can go either east or west. If they are westbound they will go to reading. If they are eastbound they will go to Slough. There are an equal number of trains going in each direction.
John likes his two girlfriends equally. Because he finds it hard to choose between them, he decides that when he goes to the station, he will take the first arriving train, regardless of whether it is going east or west. After he has done this for a month, he finds he has visited the girl in Slough 11 times as often as he has visited the girl in Reading. Assuming that he arrived in Maidenhead station at random times, why should the girl in Reading have received so little of his attention?

Q2. A man lies dead inside a trailer. He has shot himself. Close by him is a block of wood. It is a plain piece of wood about two feet long by one inch wide. The wood carries no writing or other markings and yet, it is fair to say that the sight of this piece of wood on this day caused the man to commit suicide. Why should this be so?

    He was indeed Mr Gear and well done. :)

    The man was a midget who worked in a circus as a star attraction because of his billing as the world's smallest dwarf. Each day, he measured himself with a piece of wood that was exactly his height. One day, a rival dwarf mischievously sawed two inches from the piece of wood. The man mistakenly thought he had grown and would therefore lose his fame and status as the world's smallest dwarf, so he commited suicide.

    Q1: it's because one train departs just a few minutes after the other, thus reducing the window of opportunity to actually get that train if he arrives at random times.
