Work bonuses are either hit or miss. We’ve all been in jobs where their idea of a bonus is letting you have those days off that you are entitled to anyway. “Gee, thanks,” you think, but smile and get on with it because it’s work.
We’ve also all heard of those elusive jobs where the bosses hand out grand rewards for the hardest workers as their way of saying “thank you for everything you’ve done, and for everything you will continue to do”.
One Chinese firm has raised some eyebrows with their rewards, which include a new car, a holiday, and a night with a porn star. Wait, what?
A night with ‘Julia’
The bonus was one of many unusual ones on a list from the Chinese internet security firm Qihoo 360. The leaked list has caused a lot on controversy… but that might be the fact that none of the other companies have thought of these genius ideas to say “thanks” to their staff.
The list contained things like “a trip to Bali”, “a brand new Porsche”, and “a night with the adult film star ‘Julia'”. I’m not going to lie, if I was offered any of those, I’d definitely consider taking them!
Can you imagine what it must have been like to receive that list? “Oh, hi Bob. Here’s the list of bonuses you can choose from for the Chinese New Year. Just have a look and let us know which you want.”
Would it really be that tough a choice?

However, the company have since spoken out about these unusual bonuses, stating that they have never offered a night with ‘Julia’ as a bonus and that they don’t intend to in the future.
“It appears someone manufactured a false document of what our bonuses are involving an adult entertainment actress. No such document ever existed. It’s an entirely false Internet rumour, and we can confirm it is patently false.”
So… no Porsche either?
It’s a shame, because imagine just how motivating those bonuses would be. Instead of having to save up a little of your wage each month to buy a car, you could just ask for one as a bonus!
Work bonuses
Are work bonuses a good idea? In a way, I think yes. You can show staff just how much you appreciate the hard work they do, but you have to know when to draw the line.
Things like ‘Employee of the Month’ don’t always work out the way you planned. After all, having your name and face appear in the office next to those words is cringe worthy. Would anybody want that?
