Getting to Know Dublin Airport
The construction of Dublin Airport began in 1937, which consisted of a basic grass airfield, car parks, lighting and main roads, and by 1940, served for flights between Dublin and Liverpool. In 1941, the new terminal opened up to the public, of which its design was based on luxury ocean liners from that time. During the Second World War, the flights to the airport were heavily restricted, however after the War, construction began on three concrete runways which were completed by 1947.
Throughout the 1950s, more airline routes were added to the airport which resulted in runway extensions and a terminal upgrade to deal with the influx of passengers. In 1972, an additional terminal was added to cope with the additional international routes and the delivery of wider aircraft to accommodate around five million passengers a year. The 1980s saw the addition of regular daily domestic flights added to Dublin Airport, including the additions of a new 2,640 metre runway and a control tower with cutting-edge technology. During the Celtic Tiger era of the 1990s, a period of time when Ireland enjoyed massive economic growth, there was more demand for travel to Ireland, resulting in more flight paths and tourism. It is little wonder that there was also an influx of escorts in Dublin Airport coming to the area.
There are several hotels surrounding the airport, including: Bewleys Hotel, Carlton Hotel, The Hilton and The Crowne Plaza.
